Be part of the inaugural Southwest Vertical Challenge at AZ Snowbowl, a one-of-a-kind uphill race through stunning alpine slopes at Arizona Snowbowl — where desert meets mountain.
This race is unlike anything ever hosted at Snowbowl. Prepare to climb, sweat, and earn every foot of elevation in one of the most breathtaking running events in the Southwest.

Get ready for a climb that will test your limits. The Southwest Vertical Challenge at AZ Snowbowl covers approximately 11 miles of pure ascent through the high-altitude trails of Arizona Snowbowl, offering breathtaking views of the San Francisco Peaks and Northern Arizona’s forests.
IMPORTANT: All racers must be through the Aspen Loop (approximately 7-8 miles) within 5 hours of start time.

- Scenic Elevation Gain — starting around 7,000 ft and finishing above 11,500 ft

Race FAQs
Who can participate?
The Southwest Vertical Challenge at AZ Snowbowl welcomes runners 18 and older. Due to the elevation gain and technical terrain, experience with trail or mountain running is recommended.
What should I bring?
Trail running shoes, hydration pack or handheld water bottle, sunscreen, and layered clothing — mountain weather can change quickly.
Will there be aid stations?
Yes! Hydration and nutrition stations will be available at designated points on the course.
Can I pick up my packet on race day?
No, packet pickup will be available on Thursday and Friday at a select pre-race location in Flagstaff (details released closer to race date).
Are spectators allowed?
Absolutely! Spectators can cheer runners on from designated viewing areas and enjoy the post-race celebration at the summit.
Are there awards?
Yes, podium awards for top male and female finishers, plus recognition for age group categories.
Is there a time limit?
Runners must be at the Aspen Loop Aid Station by 10:30am (4.5 hours after race start time) to continue racing up the mountain. Runners must complete the entire course within 8 hours for official results.
Will the event happen rain or shine?
Yes — unless extreme weather or safety concerns require a delay or modification.
